This Italian Island’s Explosive Color Palette Just Won Global Praise

Escape the Crowds and Discover Italy’s Most colorful Island
July 14, 2025

As summer is here, most of us are planning on finding a new place where we can relax. The small Venetian island of Burano is trending in Italy’s 2025 travel scene.

According to TimeOut, Creative studio Berlew conducted an analysis on how colourful some of the world’s top travel destinations are. They put together pictures taken by street photographers through computer vision technology, identifying the five most prominent colours in each. They also produced palettes, assessed them, and ranked Burano first.

As travel trends shift toward slower, more meaningful journeys, the island is quickly becoming a favorite for those seeking to experience Italy in a new light. Burano presents a combination of charm, safety, and cultural richness. It has beautiful candy-colored homes, peaceful canals, and an age-old lace-making tradition. This makes it a perfect stop for explorers.

Located just 45 minutes by vaporetto from Venice, many people know Burano for its photogenic charm. And this year, there has been an increase in tourism as travelers discover the peaceful and authentic experiences available away from overcrowded hotspots.

The island has several attractive sights, like the Lace Museum in Piazza Galuppi. This museum continues to attract curious visitors, while local artisans keep the delicate craft alive. You also get to appreciate the island’s culinary offerings, especially risotto de gò and the buttery bussolà cookies.

Burano was originally just a modest fishing community. However, it is now celebrated for its strikingly colorful buildings. According to local legend, the fishermen painted their homes in bright shades to easily see them when coming from the sea. Today, the town’s strict color regulations make sure that there is an aesthetic among its facades. This turns every street corner into a postcard-perfect scene.

The island is tiny, with just three canals and a handful of streets running through it. You can easily walk from one end of Burano to the other in just 10 minutes. The population of Burano is just 2,800 people, many from families who have lived on the island for generations.

A Cultural Experience

Burano is also one of the last strongholds of traditional lace-making in Italy. Once famous throughout Europe, this craftsmanship is maintained today by a small group of artisans who showcase their skills daily at the Museo del Merletto. Each piece is entirely handmade, with some pieces taking months to finish.

For those who want to connect with local traditions, there are workshops and demonstrations that provide an opportunity for both education and engagement with Burano’s close-knit community.
