The List: All Percy Jackson Books Ranked Worst To Best

February 28, 2024

I adore how Rick Riordan, the author behind the Percy Jackson book series, leads us on a journey up Mount Olympus, with stops at every Greek god’s doorstep. The books follow the hilariously sarcastic Percy Jackson, a modern-day demigod who’s basically the teenage James Bond of Greek mythology, minus the tuxedo and the cool gadgets. Riordan creates a magical web of ancient legends, making mythology as hip as the latest TikTok dance craze.

With Percy and his ragtag gang of demigod pals, including the perpetually brain-fried Annabeth and the brooding yet endearing Nico di Angelo, you’ll embark on epic quests, dodge monster attacks, and learn more about Greek mythology than your sixth-grade history class ever taught you. Riordan’s writing is like ambrosia for your brain, delivering humor, adventure, and heart in a way that’ll leave you craving more. Whether it’s battling Medusa, outsmarting the tricky Hermes, or just trying to survive high school, Percy’s snarky commentary and quick thinking will have you laughing out loud while secretly wishing you had your own sword-wielding, mythological sidekick.

These books are a gateway to the world of literature for young readers, proving that reading can be as electrifying as a bolt of Zeus’s lightning. So, if you’re in the mood for a book where the gods are as flawed as they are powerful and the heroes are as relatable as they are extraordinary, here is a list of the Percy Jackson books ranked from worst to best.

6. The Sea of Monsters (Book 2)

The Sea of Monsters, the sophomore entry in Rick Riordan’s mythological marathon, delivers an aquatic adventure that finds Percy Jackson, our snarky demigod extraordinaire, back in action, and this time, he’s taking to the high seas like a reluctant pirate with a penchant for getting into scrapes. Now, why do some fans consider it not the pièce de résistance of the Percy Jackson series?

Well, picture this: Percy and his friends set sail to rescue Grover from the clutches of a certain one-eyed Cyclops while dealing with everything from carnivorous sirens to ship-eating monsters. It’s a bit like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle through a field of landmines—entertaining but potentially explosive. Compared to the other books in the series, The Sea of Monsters might seem a tad less mind-blowing regarding plot complexity and character development. But hey, this book lays the foundation for some fantastic moments in later installments.

5. The Lightning Thief (Book 1)

The opening act of Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, “The Lightning Thief, is an electrifying dive into Greek mythology set against the backdrop of contemporary America. In this installment, Percy Jackson, your average New York teen, discovers he’s a demigod, and suddenly, Greek mythology is as real as his sarcastic quips. His first quest? Retrieve Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt. No pressure, right?

This book takes the fifth spot because, well, this list is a bit like choosing the least delicious flavor in a scoop of your favorite ice cream—it’s all still pretty amazing. In short, it has some stiff competition within its own celestial family. But don’t be fooled because this book is still a delightful entry point into the Olympian universe, with enough humor, action, and charm to make Zeus himself crack a smile.

4. The Titan’s Curse (Book 3)

As the third enchanting chapter in the series, The Titan’s Curse is like the middle child of the demigod family—still fantastic, but not quite as spotlight-stealing as the eldest and the youngest. This time, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and their new friend Thalia Grace, another child of the Big Three, set out to rescue the goddess Artemis and foil the evil Titan Kronos’s plot. It’s a rollicking quest through the United States of mythological mishaps, from a junkyard full of monsters to the sinister Mountain of Despair.

The Titan’s Curse moves at a relentless pace, is full of witty banter, and introduces us to some incredible characters like the mysterious Nico di Angelo and Bianca di Angelo, setting the stage for epic battles and shocking revelations to come. It’s a bit like the calm before the storm, and in this mythological whirlwind, even fourth place is a winner.

3. The Chalice of the Gods (Book 6)

Though it falls short of the heights achieved by its forerunners, The Chalice of the Gods is still an enthralling story in its own right. Our hero, Percy Jackson, wishes for a typical senior year devoid of godly mayhem. Still, in their infinite wisdom or lack thereof, the capricious gods decide to shatter his peaceful plans. The plot revolves around the theft of Hebe’s, the goddess of youth’s chalice. Percy and his friends accuse Hebe and Iris at first, only to realize that the true culprit is Geras, the god of old age.

Geras intends to use the chalice’s abilities to reverse his age. The mission to recover the chalice from Geras is laden with difficulties, interweaving Percy’s mythological adventures with the relatable hardships of high school and college applications. Riordan’s storytelling talent shines as he creates a symbolic tale depicting the transition from high school to the uncertainties and dreams of the future.

2. The Battle of the Labyrinth (Book 4)

The Battle of the Labyrinth, the fourth magical offering from Rick Riordan, is like a Trojan War reimagined for the 21st century, only with fewer giant wooden horses and more labyrinthine twists. This book cranks up the mythological mayhem to eleven and gives us a maze of unforgettable adventures.

In this installment, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and their friends enter the treacherous Labyrinth of Daedalus, a maze so complex it’d give a GPS a nervous breakdown. But what’s lurking inside? Just endless monsters, plot twists, and secrets that could shake the very foundations of Olympus. Plus, there’s that little matter of the brewing war between the Titans and the gods.

1. The Last Olympian (Book 5)

The Last Olympian is the golden chariot of demigod adventures, and it’s usually crowned as the best in the series for a reason. This book is the Mount Olympus of page-turners, the climax where all the epic elements converge like a Greek god summit meeting. Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and their team of demigods face off against the Titan lord Kronos and his army in an all-out war for Olympus itself.

In this installment, Percy, our snarky hero, matures like a fine Dionysian wine, and we see his friendships, leadership, and inner strength evolve in a way that’ll tug at your heartstrings. The Last Olympian is a tribute to the power of friendship, the courage to face destiny, and the enduring charm of Greek mythology. So, when ranking the best, this book reigns supreme on Mount Olympus, making it the true demigod of the series.
