How Queen & Slim’s Wardrobe Evolved Faster Than Their Relationship

June 16, 2024

Queen & Slim‘s visuals and styling had me hooked from the very first viewing. As a self-proclaimed fashion aficionado, what really caught my eye was the impeccable wardrobe that told a story all on its own. The fashion choices in Queen & Slim evolved at a pace that almost outpaced the development of the titular characters’ relationship. The wardrobe choices not only complemented but sometimes overshadowed the film’s narrative arc.

Queen & Slim’s First Date – A Study in Contrast

The film opens with a first date that’s as awkward as they come. Queen, portrayed by Jodie Turner-Smith, is decked out in a pristine white turtleneck and brown suede pants. She exudes an air of elegance and seriousness that belies the casual setting of a diner. On the other hand, Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) is more laid-back in his attire, sporting a simple outfit that screams “everyman.” This stark contrast in their fashion choices immediately sets the tone for their characters: Queen, the no-nonsense lawyer, and Slim, the easygoing guy just trying to enjoy his evening.

The choice of a white turtleneck for Queen was inspired by iconic black activists and meant to convey her commitment to fighting for justice. It’s an understated yet powerful look, much like her character’s moral fortitude. Meanwhile, Slim’s more casual attire reflects his unassuming nature and the simplicity of his life before everything turns chaotic.

Couple On the Run – From Elegant to Edgy

As the plot thickens and the couple finds themselves on the run, their wardrobe transforms significantly. We see a pivotal moment in their fashion journey at Uncle Earl’s house. Queen swaps her elegant turtleneck for a zebra-print dress while Slim dons a velvet burgundy tracksuit. This shift is not just about practicality but also a symbolic shedding of their previous identities.

The zebra-print dress Queen wears is eye-catching and practical for the stunts she has to perform. It’s durable and fits her like a second skin, symbolizing her transformation and the necessity of adapting to survive. With its rich burgundy velvet and white piping, Slim’s tracksuit showcases the detailed thought process behind each wardrobe choice. The color was chosen because it looked beautiful against his skin and stood out in the night scenes.

One of the film’s most visually striking scenes occurs in a juke joint, where the couple finds a brief moment of respite. Here, the fashion choices explode with color and personality, reflecting the cultural richness of the setting. Little Freddie King, the blues musician, is dressed in an eye-catching red suit, while the patrons’ attire ranges from over-the-top outfits to simple jeans and tank tops. This scene celebrates black culture and style, and the wardrobe choices are crucial in conveying that vitality.

The Final Run – Embracing Their True Selves

As the film progresses towards its climax, Queen and Slim’s fashion choices become more aligned with their true selves. Having shed her braids, Queen now sports her natural short hair, a powerful statement of authenticity and resilience. This change in hairstyle is as much a part of her transformation as her wardrobe.

Slim’s attire, meanwhile, remains consistent with his character’s core. The tracksuit he wears throughout their journey symbolizes his resilience and unyielding spirit. The fact that the actors wanted to keep their costumes after filming wrapped speaks volumes about the connection they felt to their characters’ wardrobes. I would have definitely held on to those ankle-high snakeskin boots as well.

Fashion as a Narrative Tool

Ultimately, the fashion in Queen & Slim is not just about looking good on screen; it’s a narrative tool that enhances the storytelling. Costume designer Shiona Turini’s meticulous attention to detail ensured that each outfit served a purpose: to highlight a character’s evolution or to reflect the cultural backdrop of the scene.

One of the standout fashion moments in the film is Uncle Earl’s (Bokeem Woodbine) black fur coat and black velour tracksuit at the funeral. This look is a nod to the flamboyant uncle who celebrates life in the most fabulous way possible.
