8 Tips For Building Your Library

May 23, 2025

There’s something great about having a place filled with all your favorite books. The perfect getaway where every cover represents a story, a memory, or an idea. Creating a personal library involves more than just collecting books, it’s about making a small universe that feels like home. Here’s how you can build your library while having so much fun I had along the way.

1. Start with the Books You Love

The foundation of any library should have books that make people happy. When you are making your library, reflect on those stories that you just couldn’t put down or the ones you’ve read repeatedly. For me, I started with my favorite books from my favorite genre, then with the books I have always wanted to read. However, I then went ahead to get ones from genres that I normally don’t read but are interesting. These books will form the essence of your collection.

2. Let Your Curiosity Guide You

One of the most enjoyable parts of building a library is allowing your curiosity to take the lead. There is a chance that you might love to read about philosophy one week, then poetry the next, and memoirs after that. Go ahead and embrace that, I’ve found out that choosing books that spark my curiosity even if they seem a bit random makes my library a more authentic representation of my character and interests.

3. Welcome Pre-Loved Books

Secondhand bookstores are a treasure. Not only are you likely to find books at a much lower cost, but there’s something unique about a pre-owned book. Additionally, you can only find some old editions and rare gems in used bookstores. I love the idea of giving a book another chance at home. However, this is especially true when it has an eccentric cover or a classic design.

4. Create a Cozy, Dedicated Space

As you start to put together your collection, it deserves a proper space. You don’t really need a full room. Know that a corner, a shelf, or even a few crates positioned against a wall can work. You can start with just one shelf. However, over time, it will turn into a cozy corner with a chair and soft lighting. Keep in mind that it’s not about the size, it’s more about creating a space where you’ll want to relax and read.

5. Don’t Rush your Project, Allow It Grow Naturally

Creating a library requires patience, and trust me when I say that’s the charm of it. Allow each book to get its spot, and don’t be in a hurry to fill your shelf all at once. You can end up finding some of your favorite titles randomly. Furthermore, welcome the idea that your library is a work in progress just like yourself.

6. Mix It Up with Different Genres and Tropes

Although you might have a couple of preferred genres, adding something unexpected from time to time adds excitement. If you are a romance lover like me, I would suggest adding in a bit of science fiction, a cookbook, and a few art volumes. You will even be surprised by how different genres complement one another. Additionally, this will transform your collection into an endless adventure.

7. Display Your Books Creatively

Bookshelves are traditional, but who says they only have one style? Experiment with different types of shelves like the mounted shelves where you get to showcase some of your favorite book covers. You can also go ahead and stack books to create a side table. Let your personality shine through in how you arrange and display your books. This changes your library from just being a collection to a unique statement piece in your home.

8. Keep a Wish list and Choose Wisely

As much as you would love to grab every book that you find, work on having a wishlist. It helps you focus and consider if it is a book you will genuinely read and love. Additionally, I believe that a wish list turns book buying into an intentional and fulfilling treasure hunt.

Building a personal library is as much about the experience as it is about the end result. Each book you add personalizes the space a little more. It represents the stories that have influenced you. So, go ahead and enjoy the collecting process. Furthermore, may your shelves be filled with books that bring you joy, inspiration, and dreams.
