Time Out has shared its selection of the most stunning outdoor cinemas in Europe. As you can imagine, the outcomes are as beautiful as one would expect. Leading the list is Barcelona’s Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, a sleek architectural masterpiece made for the 1929 International Exhibition.
Throughout the summer, movies are projected against the travertine walls next to the reflective pond. Furthermore, this changes the entire pavilion into an outdoor cinema experience. “The setting adds a layer of poetry to every screening,” said María José Gómez, director of Time Out Barcelona.
The Cinemas Journey from Cannes to Kosovo
The carefully chosen list has 20 beautiful locations across Europe, blending historic places with natural beauty. Meanwhile, here are some of them:
- Cinéma de la Plage, Cannes. This beachfront cinema is on the French Riviera. It showcases films throughout the Cannes Film Festival. According to Time Out, it has “been welcoming locals, film industry types, night owls and the odd seagull” since 2001.
- Rathausplatz, Vienna. This place is surrounded by the city’s Gothic town hall, and this summer film festival shows everything from operas to concerts. Furthermore, it is entirely free for the public.
- Arene de Pula, Croatia. A 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater hosts the screenings. Nonetheless, movie nights here are genuinely cinematic in every sense.
- Cine Thisio, Athens. With the Acropolis serving as its backdrop, many people also consider this cinema the most picturesque in the world.
- Sala Montjuïc, Barcelona. This one takes place at Montjuïc Castle. Guests bring blankets and enjoy picnics under the stars while watching cult classics and listening to live music.
- Amante, Ibiza. Located on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, this unique beach cinema offers bean bags, cava, and gourmet popcorn.
- Cinema Lliure a la Platja, also in Barcelona, showcases indie movies right on the beach and is free to attend.
Included are London’s Rooftop Film Club, Piazza Grande in Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival, Open-Air Kino Kreuzberg in Berlin, along with breathtaking setups in Santorini, Paris, Amsterdam, Mykonos, and Venice.
