Netflix’s Squid Game is a captivating Korean survival thriller TV show that people love for its survival games. The TV show captivated audiences everywhere, officially securing a spot on the roster of the 100 greatest TV shows ever. Reported by Time Out, their list aligns with what fans and critics have widely believed, that Squid Game is a contemporary classic that transformed the global streaming landscape.

Squid Game Is A Global Cultural Phenomenon

Netflix initially released Squid Game in 2021. The TV show narrates a story of debt-strained participants competing in deadly adaptations of childhood games for a big money reward. Furthermore, within some days of its debut, the series turned into a viral phenomenon. As noted by Time Out, it holds the title of “Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.”

The title comes from being viewed in over 90 countries and available with subtitles in more than 30 languages. The show is a mix of psychological tension, sharp social commentary, and emotional storytelling resonating with viewers across the world.

As Time Out put it, Squid Game “spawned countless Halloween costumes, memes, and even copycat reality shows,” referring to the Netflix spinoff Squid Game: The Challenge, which premiered in 2023. The show’s influence extended beyond the screen; however, it became a component of popular culture.

Entertainment Weekly also listed it among the best Netflix originals, stating, “The Korean drama captivated global audiences with its alluring premise, impassioned performances, and immaculate production design.”

The series also made history by breaking into significant Western awards circles. In 2022, lead actor Lee Jung-jae received the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. However, his makes him the first Asian actor to win in this category. According to Vanity Fair, Squid Game “changed TV forever” by opening doors for non-English content in Hollywood.
